Norstar Bancorp's renovation of Albany's 'Magical' Union Station presented a 'wondrous' challenge to Vulcan's customized heating designers and engineers.
After the last train departed from Albany's Union Station in 1968, this unique turn-of-the century architectural marvel became a vandalized white elephant. Sixteen years later, the once-grand monument was bought for use as corporate headquarters by Norstar Bancorp. The demands of historic preservation combined with modernization required special skills from all involved.
Vulcan was chosen to custom design and engineer the heating enclosures. A typical challenge was offered by the tall windows when a new floor level was added to the interior. Rather than bisect these windows and present a facade displeasing to preservationists, recesses were created. Vulcan then hand-crafted each enclosure with mitered corners to meet the individual requirements of each recess. The result is a sensitive blending of function and design.
